Goals of the Course(JPN)
Goals of the Course
In this research seminar, we exploit the integration of development economics, spatial data science, and econometrics to understand and inform the process of sustainable development across subnational regions and countries. Students are expected to learn a modern computational research workflow that helps them design, manage, and execute their quantitative research projects.

Course Content / Plan
The seminar schedule is decided at the start of each semester. Each seminar session usually has two parts: a paper discussion section and a research progress presentation.

Our research agenda covers a variety of topics such as:
(1) Regional inequality and development beyond GDP
(2) Quantitative geography of development
(3) Economic and social convergence
(4) Regional labor market outcomes and macroeconomic shocks
(5) Economic growth and structural change

We also use a variety of research methods such as:
(1) Spatial econometrics
(2) Panel data econometrics
(3) Time series econometrics
(4) Nonparametric econometrics
(5) Bayesian econometrics
(6) Machine learning methods
