Goals of the Course
This course introduces students to basic theories and approaches in international development studies with a particular focus on ‘poverty’. We begin by exploring how ‘development’ has been conceptualised, measured, and studied by the international development community. This is followed by a review of classic theories of development to examine different perspectives on the relationship between the state and the market in promoting development. We try particularly to understand theories about modernisation and underdevelopment, the two major currents of thought that try to explain why nations stay poor and how they should get out of poverty.
In the second part of the course, we examine the roles of different development actors including the state, bilateral aid agencies, international financial institutions, the United Nations and multilateral aid agencies, private businesses and civil society organisations. In doing so, we examine how we should think about foreign aid.
In the third part, we look at some of the contemporary issues of international development including poverty, gender, and the Covid-19 pandemic.
