Goals of the Course | | International Development Economics (IDE),"" the sequel course to ""Development Economics (DE)"" offered in the second semester will handle international aspects of development economics.
The course introduces the main issues, theories and empirical studies on international trade and globalization in the world economy. The objective is to understand the issues and the impact of international trade, FDI and global value chains (GVCs); financial globalization from the perspective of developing countries. It uses a frame work of open economy macroeconomics and development. The key topics are trade openness and industrialization strategies, globalization and its impact on economic growth and distribution (inequality and poverty); exchange rate regimes, financial globalization, capital flows and balance of payments management; Global Financial Crisis (GFC) and its impact on developing countries, and the role of global institutions like the WTO and the IMF.
Consecutive enrollment from Development Economics will be highly effective. Knowledge of Development Economics, Basic Microeconomics, and Basic Macroeconomics is required. Basic knowledge of statistics/econometrics will be preferred.
Those who are not certain about one’s qualifications should consult with the instructor (Prof. Ramaswamy) about enrollment at the first class meeting or during the initial office hours. |

Objectives of the Course | | | Upon completing the course, the students will be able acquire basic/minimum understanding of promoting economic development in the globalized world. They will appreciate (a) key factors and mechanisms driving globalization (b) understand the impact on developing countries in term of growth, poverty and inequality (c) understand the issues related to macro-economic management of financial globalization and responses of developing countries to global financial crisis and (d) interpretation and use of cross-country data and econometric models for development policy analysis. |

This course deals with the international aspects of economic development, the frontier-yet-fundamental issues of ‘Development Management under Globalization (グローバリゼーション下の開発マネジメント)’.
The course covers selected topics such as:
1. Trade Openness and Development Strategies; Why Countries Trade?
Comparative advantage; Sources of Comparative advantage ;
International Trade and Industrialization Strategies; s
2 International Trade, Global Value Chains and Development:
Trade, Globalization and Investment; Trade, Globalization and Poverty
Trade, Globalization and Inequality ; Trade, Labour and Gender equality
3. International Financial System ; Capital account convertibility issue
4. The Financial Crisis of 2007–2009: Why Did It Happen and What Did We Learn?
5. International Development Cooperation and global financial crisis
This course will consist of presentations/lectures by Prof. Ramaswamy, assigned presentations by students on selected topics/ country cases, and classroom discussions after presentations. |

成績評価の方法と基準
Course Evaluation Method and Criteria | | | Student ( or Student Groups in the class ) will be asked to prepare a term paper on a topic of their choice (approved by the instructor, with 80% weightage ) and make a presentation to the class (10%). Class participation (10%) will also be counted for final evaluation. |
