Goals of the Course
This course reviews changing debates on poverty and social policy in the global context. First, we examine how poverty has been conceptualised and measured, and what changes have been made more recently in the geography of poverty. Second, we examine the concept and practice of social protection for poor people in developing countries. We are going to use the free online course ‘Social Protection: A Primer’ developed by the Centre for Social Protection at the Institute of Development Studies in collaboration with Irish Aid. Lastly, we conduct a classroom debate on what sort of programme design could bring maximum benefits to poor people in developing countries.
