Goals of the Course [JPN]
専門的学習のツールとして外国語の能力を高め,異文化理解を深めて,国際社会に相応しい教養を育むことが目的です。そのねらいは,研究拠点大学である名古屋大学の学生にふさわしい学術英語を使いこなす能力を身につけるところにあります。学術的な英文に関する基礎的なリーディング能力とライティング能力を養成します。

This course is intended to improve students’ skills in academic English necessary to study at a research-oriented university like Nagoya University. The course aims to develop students’ abilities in reading and writing at a basic level.

論理的な英文のカギとなるパラグラフの構造に着目し、目的に応じて必要な情報をいかに読みとるか、また逆に、自分の考えをその根拠とともにいかに説得力ある論理的な英文に組み立てるかを学ぶ。将来、専門の論文を英語で読んだり書いたりする時に、指針となる英文構成法の基礎、および実際に役立つ英語表現を多く習得する。

Objectives of the Course [ENG]
The major assignment in this course is to practice writing multiple paragraphs in order to
complete a library research essay. It aims to help students critically evaluate sources, which is crucial in academic writing and presentations. First, you will select a topic that you have questions about. Then, you will find reliable sources about your topic in order to compare how scientifically reasonable and persuasive they are.

Course policies:

In-class Performance
• Each time you miss a real-time meeting will be considered as one absence.
• Joining a meeting more than 15 minutes late will be considered as one absence.
• Joining a meeting while you are commuting to campus will be considered as one absence.
• Being absent from 5 lessons or more will result in a final grade of a “W”「欠席」.
• You are expected to turn your camera on during real-time class meetings in order to make communication with classmates easier and demonstrate your active participation. If you do not turn your camera on, you will be marked absent, unless special circumstances that prevent you from using it occur (e.g., technology issues - internet disconnection or a broken webcam). When such circumstances arise, please contact me to explain your situation.

Homework Submissions
• All homework assignments should be completed in full. Assignments that are missing responses to one or more questions will receive a score of 0 and be counted as one absence.
• Each time you fail to submit your homework assignments or submit them late will be counted as one absence (due dates will be announced every week).
• Submitting homework assignments by email is not acceptable and will be counted as one absence.
• If you are found to have taken any of the following actions when submitting assignments, you will receive a score of 0 on the assignments and/or a final course grade of “F” in the worst cases.
- Plagiarizing information: copying and pasting texts from others’ work, sources, websites, etc. and presenting it as your own original work OR failing to provide citations each time you take information and ideas from sources (both in-text citations and the reference list in standard MLA Format).
- Using Generative AI such as ChatGPT to produce text and submitting it as their own original work
- Writing the essay or any homework assignment in Japanese, translating the text into English with a website such as DeepL, and submitting the English text produced by DeepL as your own original work.
