本授業は、社会言語学の基礎を習得し、日本文化とコミュニケーションスタイルに対する理解を深めるとともに、理論的に分析できるようになることを目的とします。言語と文化の関係を深く探り、異文化コミュニケーション能力育成への応用も考えます。

Goals of the Course
The course aims to introduce basic concepts and research approaches to the connection between language, culture and society. It aims to enhance the understanding of basic concepts of sociolinguistics as well as practical knowledge about Japanese language and communication culture.
到達目標 【日本語】
Objectives of the Course(JPN)
(1) To get acquainted with the basic concepts of sociolinguistics and be able to explain these and provide examples from everyday life.
(2) To deepen understanding of your own and others’ linguistic behavior by reconsidering the relationship between language and society and reflecting on your own experiences.
(3) To acquire practical intercultural communication skills in Japanese settings.

Course Content / Plan
This is an active learning course, and participants will be expected to join in-class discussions and activities. Below are the sample topics to be discussed. However, the course plan is tentative and subject to change depending on students’ interests.

Course Prerequisites and Related Courses
There are no prerequisites for this course.
The course is fully taught in English. The basic knowledge on Japanese syllabic writing systems and grammar is welcome but not required.

Active class participation and reflection papers: 15%
Reflection papers and assignments: 45%
Final presentation: 40%
