授業の目的 【英語】 Goals of the Course | | ◇ Students will become familiar with the contours of early modern Japanese culture, and the social, economic, and ideological forces that shaped it.
◇ Students will gain exposure to theoretical approaches and practices currently employed in the fields of cultural history and cultural studies.
◇ Students will conduct original research on a topic related to early modern Japanese culture and share the results of their research via in-class presentations and a final project. |

授業の内容や構成 Course Content / Plan | | In this class, we will study representations of the supernatural in the literature and visual culture of early modern Japan, and consider the various ways in which monsters (yōkai) and ghosts became a site for interrogating and critiquing social and political norms. Our work will begin with early Chinese bestiaries and other forms of cataloguing the strange, before progressing to representations in supernatural literature, theater, and visual media. All materials for this course will be provided on our course site and in most cases, will be in English translation (there may be a few optional readings in Japanese). No prior background in Japanese Studies or proficiency in Japanese language is required to enroll in this course. |

成績評価の方法と基準 Course Evaluation Method and Criteria | | Discussion Meetings: 10%
Students who participate in a minimum of ten discussion meetings this semester (with the exception of the first meeting) can earn a maximum of 10% toward their final grade. Note that participation means active participation--clearly being engaged in the discussion, asking questions, offering comments, etc.
Weekly Discussion Prompts: 10%
As a means of generating lively discussion and enabling everyone in the class to share their thoughts about the material, I will be asking each student to post a comment, introduce an interpretation, or pose a question about the assigned reading(s) ten (10) times over the course of the semester. At the end of each lesson module, there will be a text box for you to share your thoughts. I will read the posts before class and find ways to work them into discussion so that your voice can be heard. You will be credited 1% of your final grade for each discussion prompt you post.
Module Writing Assignments: 50% (10 Modules @ 5% each)
This course is designed as a series of discrete lesson modules, each of which culminates in a brief (300-word) writing assignment. Each writing assignment will be graded on a scale of 5 (counting for 5% of the final grade).
Research Paper: 30%
For this class, each student is required to write a research paper. Please refer to the assignment description for details. For undergraduate students, the paper should be a minimum of 2500-3000 words and include references to at least three academic sources. For graduate students, the paper should be around 3500-5000 words, and include references to at least five academic sources. Creative projects are permitted, but they must be submitted along with a research paper (minimum 1500 words) that includes analysis relevant to the project. Projects that do not include an accompanying research paper will not be accepted. |

課外学習等(授業時間外学習の指示) Study Load(Self-directed Learning Outside Course Hours) | | In addition to the ninety (90) minutes of time spent in each class meeting, students should expect to spend time outside of class each week reading and working on assignments and/or final papers. The workload will probably fluctuate from week to week, depending on how you manage your time, but on average two hours should suffice. |

IMPORTANT: I will NOT be using NUCT to teach this class. Our class will be taught on CANVAS and our weekly meetings will be held on ZOOM. After you fill out the signup sheet linked above, I will provide you with the password for accessing the CANVAS site and the URL for ZOOM. It is your responsibility to fill out the signup sheet before the semester starts.
Note that I will be opening the course site on Friday, April 1st. That way, you can view the online version of the syllabus, peruse the schedule of course readings, and even get a head start working on some of the lesson modules before the semester starts. |
