Goals of the Course
The goal of this course is to introduce students to the basic skills necessary to compose persuasive legal arguments. Legal writing is a skill quite different from both day to day writing (of emails, letters, and so forth) and also academic writing (of essays) that students often encounter. It is a skill that legal practitioners need to use and refine on a regular basis.

Objectives of the Course
The main objective of the course is to teach students how to write legal arguments that are persuasive. This separates it from academic writing where the goal is to write in an objective way - lawyers are biased in favor of their clients and engage in writing as a form of advocacy on their behalf.

We do so by learning how to compose legal documents that lawyers use to construct arguments and analysis of the law - pleadings, memorandum, briefs and similar documents.

At the end of the course students will be able to:

Correctly structure written legal arguments in the context of pleadings, memorandum and briefs.

Apply legal rules to fact situations in written arguments

Compose legal arguments based on analogies.

Know how to explain the meaning of legal rules in written arguments.

Know how to compose policy and other types of supplemental legal arguments.

Understand the key elements of legal writing necessary to be persuasive.
