授業の目的 【英語】 Goals of the Course | | This course aims to acquire basic knowledge of economic history. Economic history is a discipline to understand the economic system for our life comprehensively and historically. In particular, this course seeks to foster our understanding of economic history through focusing on the key economic factors, such as industrialization, international trade, and living standards. |

授業の内容や構成 Course Content / Plan | | First, this course will learn the historical development of modern economic system in the West. Western economy started to grow rapidly and overwhelmed other regions' economies from the eighteenth century. Course participants will study how the rise of Western economy transformed the development pattern of world economy in the past few centuries.
Second, the course will focus on Industrial Revolution to understand the historical innovation of modern economic system. Industrial Revolution that took place in eighteenth-century England ignited the dramatic improvement in efficiency of manufacturing industry. Industrialization spread across the globe and became fundamental factor for economic growth in the past two centuries. Participants will learn the origins of Industrial Revolution and its effect on global economic development.
Third, we will pay attention to international trade as driving force for economic globalization. Since the nineteenth century, international trade grew at an unprecedented rate based on global industrialization. Every country came to participate in international trade development, and consequently, international division of labour system was established across the globe. We will study the long-term growth of international trade and key features of its impact on globalization.
Fourth, the course will focus on the historical changes of living standards in some regions to comprehend the effect of industrial economic growth. Since Industrial Revolution, our living standards were dramatically enhanced by innovative production system and growing international trade. Meanwhile, the economic inequality has been increasing between developed and underdeveloped countries. Participants will understand how industrialization and globalization led to the improvement and disparity of living standard across the globe from historical perspective. |

成績評価の方法と基準 Course Evaluation Method and Criteria | | This course will assess each student's grade based on active participation (20%), presentation assignment (30%), and report (50%).
The assessment criteria are as follows.
Active Participation: participants must exchange their ideas with others based on proper understanding of economic history.
Presentation Assignment: participants must understand basic knowledge of economic history. They must summarise their understanding in a short presentation.
Report: participants must write a short report. In a report, they are required to present thier understanding and idea about historical development of global economy. |
