Goals of the Course

This course aims to extend students’ vocabulary and give them a basic knowledge of Japanese society. Students are encouraged to participate cooperatively in class.

Objectives of the Course(JPN)
At the end of this course, participants are expected to:
-be able to read and understand news articles when they are expressed in simple Japanese.
-be able to recognize significant points in straightforward newspaper articles.
-be able to identify the main conclusion in clearly signalled argumentative texts.
-be able to summarize and give his or her opinion about an article and answer further questions of detail.
-be able to ask for and follow detailed directions.
授業の内容や構成
Course Content / Plan
Every week, the students are assigned to read the news articles that the lecturer picked up. Students will have the opportunity to read articles from Japanese newspapers and discuss the issues in them.

The usual class is designed as below.
-introduction of the class
-reading news articles individually.
-peer reading
-promoting explanation activity
-round up the class.

※Students who received an exemption from a Japanese language course in an International and exchange centre are underqualified to sign up for this course.
-Eligibility to enrol in this class is to have passed JLPT N3 or above.
成績評価の方法と基準
Course Evaluation Method and Criteria
Your final grade will be calculated according to the following process:
- Contribution to class discussions (30%)
- Assignment (40%)
- Final examination (30%)
To pass,
-students must participate and actively express what they have understood in the class and their thoughts on the topics.
- students must show their understanding and critical opinions on the oral examinations and the assignments.

The lecturer will hand out materials during the class.
Realia (Newspaper articles)
Learners should read and listen to current Japanese events to understand social science. Therefore, newspaper articles will be materials, not textbooks.

Notice for Students
This course will be taught in Japanese. This syllabus is temporary. It may be altered due to the students’ Japanese proficiency level. They are required to prepare and review each lesson. In addition to the lecturer's assignments, they are expected to carry out work independently.
※Students are expected to attend every class. If the student were absent for more than ten lectures, he/she would be considered “absent.”
※Being late (within 9 minutes) three times is counted as one absence.
