Goals of the Course | | | This course will explore how Japan has been culturally represented within and outside its nation-state boundaries for different purposes and audiences since the mid-nineteenth century. |

Objectives of the Course(JPN) | | 論文の読解、レポート、クラスでの議論を通じて、それぞれユニークな異文化接触の場となった写真、世界博、音楽、演劇、映画、スポーツイベントに関する知識と分析力を身につける。
Through reading and writing assignments and classroom discussions, students will acquire knowledge and skills to comparatively examine various cultural objects and social events that have provided a unique form of cross-cultural encounter - such as photography, world expositions, traditional and popular music, theatre, films and sport events. |

授業の内容や構成
Course Content / Plan | | The course will critically engage with questions below, with a varied emphasis according to each topic, through readings, class discussions, in-class activities, a presentation and writing assignments. Class topics will be organized chronologically from the mid-nineteenth century to present.
1. What meanings and aesthetic values have been associated with Japan and Japanese as a national identity, culture and group of people?
2. What cultural artifacts have been employed to distribute certain meanings and values of Japan questioned above?
3. How are differences – e.g. gender, race, ethnicity, economic class and place identities – constructed through each event or cultural object?
4. What political, sociocultural and economic goals are sought, if any, through each event or object? |
