Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: • Become familiar with key concepts and research frameworks in cultural studies and related fields. • Theoretically discuss issues in culture, society and visual media by drawing upon prominent academic authors. • Verbally present main findings in existing research on the course subject with confidence. |

授業の内容や構成 Course Content / Plan | | Some of the concepts to be covered are cultural production and consumption, mobile privatization, affective work, governmentality, neoliberalism, and postfeminism. After covering the concepts and debates surrounding them, students will read Chrys Ingraham's White Weddings: Romancing Heterosexuality in Popular Culture (Routledge 2008) to become familiar with an intersectional approach to popular culture. |

課外学習等(授業時間外学習の指示) Study Load(Self-directed Learning Outside Course Hours) | | All students are expected to come to class with weekly readings done. For every class, you will write a critical response (300-500 words) to a required reading, in which you will (i) summarize the core argument of the text; and (ii) write your commentaries and questions regarding this text. You must submit your response paper to a reading in the class in which the reading will be discussed. Main objectives of this assignment are to encourage your active engagement with diverse cultural and social theories, to prepare you for class discussion and to facilitate the development of your critical thinking and writing skills. |
