授業の内容や構成 Course Content / Plan | | Systemic functional linguistics (SFL) is an approach to linguistics that considers language as a social semiotic system. That is, it seeks to explain meaning-making as a social practice. Since social practices are a reflection of power relations within society, SFL is a highly suitable form of linguistics for scholars working in the field of critical discourse analysis (CDA) (which is the subject of the instructor’s “Language and Society III” course). The course will begin by introducing students to the theory and methods of SFL. In particular, the work of Michael Halliday and his followers will be extensively discussed. Subsequently, a number of CDA studies in which SFL has been applied will be reviewed. The course will also include a critical examination of the various criticisms that have been made of SFL. The course will mainly examine SFL in relation to English but Japanese and other languages may also be discussed depending on the needs and interests of the participants. |
