授業の目的 【英語】 Goals of the Course | | The aim of this course is to provide students with a comprehensive introduction to the field of critical discourse analysis (CDA). The focus will be on introducing the various theories and methods of CDA and discussing the ways in which these have been applied. |

授業の内容や構成 Course Content / Plan | | Critical discourse analysis (CDA) is an approach to the study of discourse that regards language as a form of social practice. Scholars working in the tradition of CDA investigate how societal power relations are established, reinforced and challenged through language use. The course will begin by introducing students to the various theories and methods of CDA. In particular, the work of Norman Fairclough and his followers will be extensively discussed. Subsequently, a number of studies in which CDA has been applied will be reviewed. The course will also include a critical examination of the various criticisms that have been made of CDA. |

履修条件・関連する科目 Course Prerequisites and Related Courses | | None. But please note that this is a Linguistics and Cultural Studies Program course and that, in principle, successful completion of this course is a prerequisite for taking the instructor’s spring semester course on Media Discourse. |

成績評価の方法と基準 Course Evaluation Method and Criteria | | Students will be evaluated according to their rate of attendance (10%), degree of active participation in class (20%), PowerPoint presentation (30%) and a final report (40%). |
