This course will examine a range of gender-related topics in Japanese modern literature, including but not limited to the following: feminist movements, representations of women's bodies, pregnancy and childbirth, beauty standards, gendered violence, and intersections of gender with race and age.

W1-3: Feminist movements and women's bodies in modern history
W4-6: Pregnancy and childbirth from Meiji to Heisei
W7-10: Gendered violence
W11-13: Intersections of gender, age, race
W10-15: Aesthetic labor in the age of neoliberalism
