授業の目的 【英語】 Goals of the Course | | This seminar-style course aims to foster intellect to understand the historical development of current global economy through studying the latest research on Global Economic History. Particularly, we focus on economic development of Asian regions including Japan, because Asia has historically contributed to the growth of the modern global economy. Ultimately, we seek to comprehend the long-term development of modern global and regional economies by reading relevant books for Asia's economic development path and historical interaction with Western economy. |

授業の内容や構成 Course Content / Plan | | First, the course delivers basic knowledge concerning Global Economic History. We will learn some significant arguments of pioneering research on global economic history and their key features and issues for understanding the new historical research field. In so doing, we will read the recent publication, Global Economic History.
Second, we will learn the latest research on historical interactions between Western and Asian economies by reading a significant research volume for this theme. By reading and discussing chapters of a research monograph in turn, course participants can acquire a profund understanding on the origins of economic globalization from multiregional perspective.
Third, we will discuss the distinctive features of Asian economic development from region-specific and long-term perspective. In particular, we will focus on the labour intensive industrialization that has been underlying Asia's economic growth in the past few centuries. Through reading important research books regarding Asia's labour intensive industrialization and discussing its arguments, we can comprehend the essential features of Asian economic development path and its historical dependency. |

成績評価の方法と基準 Course Evaluation Method and Criteria | | This course will assess each participant's grade based on active participation to seminar (20%), presentation assignment (30%), and report (50%).
The assessment criteria are as follows.
Active Participation: participants must share their ideas based on proper understanding of global economic history and Asian economic history.
Presentation Assignment: participants must understand the arguments of global economic history and Asian economic history. They must summarise their understanding and opinions in a short presentation.
Report: participants must write a short report. In a report, they need to present thier understanding about historical development of global and Asian economies. |
