Goals of the Course
This course aims to provide the students who join GSID Overseas Fieldwork (OFW) with basic information about the country of study, fieldwork methods, and data analysis methods. Students will be able to understand the field site situation and current discussion related to their research topics to get ready for the fieldwork. In 2024, students will conduct fieldwork in Cambodia.

Learn about development issues in Cambodia.

Acquire skills needed to plan fieldwork.

Acquire skills to conduct interviews with various stakeholders.

Course Content / Plan
Five classes aim to provide the background of the country of study and related topics in the field. Four classes aim to provide knowledge about research methods. In addition to the lectures, students are required to do two group presentations during the course.

Tentative schedule:
1. Introduction to OFW 2024
2. Overview of Cambodia and the research site
3. Cambodia 1: education issues
4. Cambodia 2: economic issues
5. Cambodia 3: political issues
6. Cambodia 4: migration issues
7. Group presentation to share research interests
8. Research methods 1 [joint class with DFW]
9. Research methods 2 [joint class with DFW]
10. Research methods 3 [joint class with DFW]
11. Research methods 4 [joint class with DFW]
12. Group work on the research proposal
13. Group presentation on the research proposal
14. Risk management
15. Khmer language lesson

Notice for Students
Those who are willing to take this course should attend the guidance at the beginning of April 2024.
All the students who join OFW are required to take this course for credits.
The fieldwork in Cambodia will take place in September 2024.
Classes will be given by resource persons both within and outside GSID.
Willingness and ability to work in a research team setting is a necessity.
