Goals of the Course
This course will examine the theory, policy, management and practice of Non-Governmental Organizations(NGOs)and Civil Society both in international and local context. This subject also analyses their issues and challenges, and partnership with stakeholders (government, business, community etc.) for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development including SDGs, malti stakeholder partnerships (MSPs) plays critical role for the achievement of the global goal. Especially, for the SDGs motto, ‘leave no one behind’, civic engagement with NGOs/Civil Society are highly expected as asocial innovator to tackle with the challenges of sustainable development. Civic engagement and people's participatory development are essential for bottom-up approach toward sustainable development. In perspective of SDGs, development is global issue; not only t for developing world but also developed one.

Based on the curriculum policy, this course aims to offer 'multifaceted, complex analysis of real-world issues facing the international community, governments, and citizens' related to NGOs/Civil Society. Based on the diploma policy, the participants are expected to be 'researchers and professionals who-using social science theories and methods' with the knowledge of NGOs/Civil society and its relationship with government, community and other stakeholders.

Let's 'Think globally, Act Locally' to 'Transform our World'.

Objectives of the Course
Students are expected to be eligible to
1) Understand theory, policy, management and practice of NGO/Civil society in analytical way.
2) Analyze NGOs/Civil Society and multi stakeholder partnerships (MSPs) towards SDGs.
3) Explore the challenges and issues of NGOs/ Civil Society and MSPs on the ground through GSID-NGOs Field Work (NFW).
4) Advocate policies and commit to practices based on the academic analysis.
5) 'Think globally, act locally' as global citizen.

Course Content / Plan
*4 Days intensive course.
Day 1.
1. Introduction. Kick off for global active learning,
*Guidance to the purpose and outline of the course and facilitate active learning of students with diverse backgrounds.
2. Academic Analysis on NGOs/Civil Society (1)
3. Academic Analysis on NGOs/Civil Society (2)
*Lean theories, policies, concepts and models of studies on NGOs/Civil Society.

Day 2.
4. Diversity and Civic Engagement of NGOs/Civil Society (1)
5. Diversity and Civic Engagement of NGOs/Civil Society (1)
*Explore diversity of NGOs/Civil Society and civic engagement in historical, cultural and social contexts.
6. NGOs/Civil Society on International Development and SDGs (2)
7. NGOs/Civil Society on International Development and SDGs (2)
*Examine the roles, issues and challenges of NGOs/ Civil Society and multi stake holders partnership (MSPs) on International Development and SDGs.
*Preparation for GSID-NGOs Field Work (NFW) and instruction on terminal assignments.

*Plan to visit Yokkaichi city to learn policy and practice of NGOs, civic engagement and local government on environmental issues.

Day 4.
13. Reflection and Workshop on NGOs/Civil Society
*Reflect the whole lectures and deepen the student's analysis.
14. Final Presentation
*Answer to the question on terminal assignment and share ideas for term paper (long essay).
15. Conclusion
*Wrap up the study of the whole course and show insights for the future.

Course Prerequisites and Related Courses
Participation to GSID-NGOs Field Work (NFW) is a compulsory part of the course. NGOs as key stake holders are related to various areas subjects of international development.

Course Evaluation Method and Criteria
1) Contribution to the course and assignments -50%
2)Terminal assignments: final presentation and terminal paper(long essay)-50%

*Credit is given to C- or C (where applicable) or higher grade for each criterion.

-This course plans to use inter-active and PBL teaching methods, such as group work, discussion, presentation case study and, if possible, field work.
-The course plan/schedule may be subject to change for the improvement of education and and other relevant reasons.
-Regarding to the GSID-NGOs Field work and its schedule will depend on the availablity of the host organization and other relevant reasons. Students are need to cover travel fee and necessary costs and to take their responsibility for the safety of the visit. Further details will be informed.
