授業の目的 【英語】 Goals of the Course | | This course is aimed at providing basic ideas of comparative methods for empirical analysis in social sciences. Since methodological development in social sciences has been remarkable in the last decades, academic works cannot go without a proper understanding of methodological basics. The overall picture and baseline logic of methodology, however, are not shared always. This course addresses a basic framework of academic research, core ideas of causal inference, and differences and similarities among a variety of methodologies. |

到達目標 【英語】 Objectives of the Course | | By taking this course, students can learn:
(1) why comparative methods can provide a validating logic for causal inference;
(2) how comparative methods with qualitative and quantitative data should be employed;
(3) what methods should be used for given research subjects; and
(4) what advantages and disadvantages accompany the choice
This course may use examples of political science for illustration and practical learning, but the basic logic should apply across social science disciplines. |

成績評価の方法と基準 Course Evaluation Method and Criteria | | Discussion in the class: 10 points x 15 = 150
*Active participation in class will receive additional points.
Short answers for quizzes: 10 points x 13 times = 130
Report: 120
Minimum points required to pass: 280
*Grading: C- (280-299), C (300-319), B (320-339), A (340-369), A+ (370-400)
*No point will be given if one arrives more than 5 minutes late to class.
*No remedy for late or no submission of assignments.
*Credits will be given to C- or C (where applicable) or higher grade. |
