この講義では、大学院レベルの初学者を対象に、開発経済学の基本的な論点をカバーします。中でもマクロレベルでの経済成長論とミクロレベル(家計や個人)の意思決定の基礎、及びその実証研究の理解に重点を置きます。トピックとしては、1) 経済成長論と実証、2)構造変化(人口、投資、技術、都市・農村関係)、3)人的資本(教育・健康)、4)貧困(不平等と保険メカニズム)、5)起業と金融、6)ガバナンスと制度を予定しています。

Goals of the Course
This course covers basic principles of development economics for students who study for the first time at graduate level. The priority is placed on understanding of both macro-level economic growth theory and micro-level household/individual decision making together with their empirical research. The topics include 1) economic growth theories and evidence, 2) structural changes (population, investment, technology and urban-rural sectors), 3) human capital (education and health), 4) poverty (income distribution and insurance), 5) entrepreneurship and finance and 6) governance and institutions.

この講義を履修する学生は、開発経済学の基礎的な知識や理解を深めることにより、経済学で使われる概念やツールを用いて、経済開発に対する自分の考え方を発展させることができるようになります。そのため、この講義は開発経済学の主要な原理について直感的に理解し、政策的インプリケーションを引き出す実証的な研究に精通することに重点を置きます。開発経済学の国際的側面(貿易、直接投資、移民、開発援助など)は秋学期の「国際開発経済学」で扱います。

Objectives of the Course
Students are expected to learn the basic knowledge/understanding of development economics so that they can develop their own ideas on economic development using concepts and tools of economics. This cource lecture will emphasize on intuitional understanding of major principles of development economics and empirical research to draw policy implications with a focus on international development issues.
授業の内容や構成
Course Content / Plan
After the overview of development economics and measurement of economic development, the first half of this cource covers macroeconomics of economic development: major economic growth theories and their empirical evidence as well as production factors (population, investment and technology) and sectororal changes (urban-rural relationship). The latter half of this lecture deals with microeconomics of economic development with a brief introduction of econometrics and policy evaluation, which covers human capital (education and health), poverty and insurance, entreprenership and finance as well as governance and institutions.

1. The schedule is subject to changes depending on the progress of the class.
2. Mathematics and statistics such as differentiation and linear algebra relevant to the lecture will be reviewed in the class if necessary.

Course Prerequisites and Related Courses
This course will accommodate first-time learners of development economics. Concurrent registrations for relevant classes such as “Development Macroeconomics” and “Development Microeconomics” are recommended.
成績評価の方法と基準
Course Evaluation Method and Criteria
A term paper/report (70%) and class participation/contribution (30%). Details will be discussed in the class.
Credit is given of C- or C(where applicable)or higher for each graded criterion.
