Students will study the step-by-step processes necessary for psycholinguistic research (i.e., doing background research, designing an experiment with an appropriate hypothesis, programming an experiment, analyzing data, interpreting results, and writing up a manuscript) towards a publishable paper. Students will also acquire the skills to read relevant academic papers and organize the information by connecting it to their existing knowledge. |

Course Content / Plan | | The course is about the writing of an experimental research paper, which involves many tasks: planning a study, doing background research, designing an experiment, programming an experiment, collecting data, analyzing data, interpreting results, and writing up a paper. This whole process is summarized on the instructor's website in more detail: https://kojimiwa.com/abcdefghi.html.
In weekly meetings, students and the instructor will discuss academic articles relevant to students' doctoral project. Depending on the students' progress, the class time will be devoted to data analyses, statistical training, and/or a theoretical discussion. Throughout the semester, students are also expected to schedule their writing, stick to it, and monitor their progress. |

Course Prerequisites and Related Courses | | It is important that students have a research topic before registering in this course. It is highly recommended that students have a good understanding about the instructor's research interest as a psycholinguist. |
Course Evaluation Method and Criteria | | Reading summaries or participation in experiments (3% * 10), a term paper or a presentation (70%). Note: (1) As a rule, only articles published in journals listed in the Social Sciences Citation Index will count for the reading summaries. (2) participation in an experiment of other researchers is equivalent to one article summary, but participation in an experiment is not obligatory. (3) A letter grade will be assigned based on students' absolute performance. |
Textbook | | Students find relevant articles by themselves throughout the semester. |
