専門的学習のツールとして外国語の能力を高め，異文化理解を深めて，国際社会に相応しい教養を育むことが目的です。そのねらいは，研究拠点大学である名古屋大学の学生にふさわしい学術英語を使いこなす能力を身につけるところにあります。学術的な英文に関する基礎的なリーディング能力とライティング能力を養成します。

This course is intended to improve students’ skills in academic English necessary to study at a research-oriented university like Nagoya University. The course aims to develop students’ abilities in reading and writing at a basic level.

論理的な英文のカギとなるパラグラフの構造に着目し、目的に応じて必要な情報をいかに読みとるか、また逆に、自分の考えをその根拠とともにいかに説得力ある論理的な英文に組み立てるかを学ぶ。将来、専門の論文を英語で読んだり書いたりする時に、指針となる英文構成法の基礎、および実際に役立つ英語表現を多く習得する。

Objectives of the Course [ENG]
Students will learn to gather ideas, plan, and organize a structure for presenting them, and finally compose the ideas into a composition. Students will learn how to write a coherent opinion and a cohesive short essay while learning the basic mechanics of writing.
授業の内容や構成
Course Content or Plan
This course teaches basic English composition skills and techniques. This course builds skills to develop basic level students towards the intermediate level. The course will focus on skills for organization and synthesizing ideas together.

 Be able to think deeply, weigh different sides of an issue, and reflect on personal experience.
 Improve writing skills through sharing opinions and other strategies.
 Increase comprehension ability through reading and listening in meaningful focused activities.
 Be exposed to, and understand, a wide range of speaking styles and varieties of international English.
 Gain confidence and increase motivation for using English.

4月のTOEFL-ITPスコアによるレベル別クラス指定。再履修の場合はBコースのみ受講可。
成績評価の方法と基準
Course Evaluation Method and Criteria
e-Learning 20%, 40% for the weekly assignments, 20% for the midterm writing assignment, 20% for the final writing assignment.
履修取下げの際に申し出を必要としない。５回以上欠席をした場合、「Ｗ」とする。
