授業の内容や構成
Course Content or Plan
This is for Pre-A course students.
This course will use an extensive reading approach combined with various other academic and general reading and writing tasks centering on understanding the key importance of paragraph structure and mastering a variety of useful academic expressions. The course will be divided into three principal components. [1] First, at the beginning of this course the instructor will spend two lessons explaining the principles behind extensive reading and considering the ways in which it differs from the kind of English reading that most students have previously experienced. Students will be asked to reflect on and discuss their own English (and Japanese) reading practices and consider ways in which the extensive reading approach might benefit them. The instructor will also explain the system of writing tasks which will be used in the course. Since students participating in this course will be expected to take a higher than usual degree of responsibility for managing their own learning, the system of class management will also be explained in detail during the first two classes of the course. [2] Once students are familiar with the system, they will be ready to begin the main part of the course. Here they will be expected to progress through a series of graded reader books, reading at their own pace but aiming to gradually increase both their speed and their level of reading comprehension. At this stage, after reading each book, students will be required to complete a writing assignment based on what they have read and utilizing their developing knowledge of paragraph structure and academic expressions. [3] In addition, students will be given regular opportunities to present their work to their classmates and the instructor. The instructor will also review their work and give them feedback and advice on how to further improve their reading and writing abilities.
