Goals of the Course [JPN]
専門的学習のツールとして外国語の能力を高め，異文化理解を深めて，国際社会に相応しい教養を育むことが目的です。そのねらいは，研究拠点大学である名古屋大学の学生にふさわしい学術英語を使いこなす能力を身につけるところにあります。学術的な英文に関する基礎的なリーディング能力とライティング能力を養成します。

This course is intended to improve students’ skills in academic English necessary to study at a research-oriented university like Nagoya University. The course aims to develop students’ abilities in reading and writing at a basic level.

Objectives of the Course [JPN]
論理的な英文のカギとなるパラグラフの構造に着目し、目的に応じて必要な情報をいかに読みとるか、また逆に、自分の考えをその根拠とともにいかに説得力ある論理的な英文に組み立てるかを学ぶ。将来、専門の論文を英語で読んだり書いたりする時に、指針となる英文構成法の基礎、および実際に役立つ英語表現を多く習得する。

Objectives of the Course [ENG]
Focusing on the paragraph structure, students will study how to extract necessary information quickly and how to write effectively with a logical storyline. Students will study the basics of English composition that will help them to read and write professional academic papers in English in the future.
授業の内容や構成
Course Content or Plan
While the course consists of both reading and writing components, weekly classes will primarily focus on the latter. The textbook will be used as follows:

Week 1: Introduction to Academic English Basic
Week 2: Paragraphs (Unit 1)
Week 3: Topic sentences (Unit 3)
Week 4: Supporting and concluding sentences (Unit 4)
Week 5: Paragraph review (Unit 5), APA style
Week 6: Developing ideas for writing (Unit 2), APA style
Week 7: Midterm exam, APA style
Week 8: Narrative paragraphs (Unit 9)
Week 9: Narrative paragraphs (Unit 9)
Week 10: Process paragraphs (Unit 7)
Week 11: Process paragraphs (Unit 7)
Week 12: Opinion paragraphs (Unit 8)
Week 13: Opinion paragraphs (Unit 8)
Week 14: From paragraphs to essays (Unit 10),
Week 15: Course review and final exam


Students write two take-home essays (both one paragraph in length). References will be allowed for the essays. However, plagiarized essays will face serious consequences.
