専門的学習のツールとして外国語の能力を高め，異文化理解を深めて，国際社会に相応しい教養を育むことが目的です。リスニングとスピーキングを主としたコミュニケーションの能力を高め，ディスカッションやプレゼンテーションのための基礎力を養成します。

This course is intended to improve students’ skills in listening and speaking suitable for academic communication in English. Students will develop basic oral/aural communication skills for academic discussion and presentation.

Students will acquire basic communication skills for discussions and presentations through class activities that focus on listening and speaking.
授業の内容や構成
Course Content or Plan
The language of instruction is 100% English (If students speak Japanese, they are considered “absent"). Each week, three to four students will serve as student teachers to facilitate in-class discussions on a particular topic. Students will study various communication skills (e.g., making eye contact, adjusting stress patterns and intonation, using descriptive words, controlling pace, and expressing emotion). The following course plan is tentative and subject to revision during the semester, depending on students’ progress and, to an extent, topics of their interest.

Week 2: Various communication skills
Week 3: Discussion on "food"
Week 4: Discussion on "sports"
Week 5: Discussion on "pets"
Week 6: Discussion on "movies and books"
Week 7: Discussion on "traveling"
Week 8: Discussion on "foreign cultures"
Week 9: Discussion on "education"
Week 10: Discussion on "heroes"
Week 11: Discussion on "friends"
Week 12: Discussion on "romantic relationship and marriage"
Week 13: Discussion on "working in society"
Week 14: Discussion on "inventions"
Week 15: Discussion on "happiness"

履修条件は要さない。
成績評価の方法と基準
Course Evaluation Method and Criteria
TOEFL-ITP (30%), e-learning (20%), In-class discussion leading (15% * 2), in-class contribution (20%)
履修取下げの際に申し出を必要としない。５回以上欠席をした場合、「Ｗ」とする。

Notice for Students
授業を未受講、または評価が「Ｗ」となった場合、次の期の単位補充クラスを受講できない。同じ科目を再履修できるのは次の次の期（1年後）になる。進級・卒業に支障をきたさないよう十分注意すること。「履修の手引き」の英語科目の注意事項を要確認。12月のTOEFL ITP受験が必要。
