This course is intended to improve students’ skills in listening and speaking suitable for academic communication in English. Students will develop basic oral/aural communication skills for academic discussion and presentation.

This course is intended to help students gain a deeper understanding of the English language and English-based cultures in the modern world. The course provides students with opportunities to engage in a range of academic tasks that cultivate awareness and appreciation of contemporary issues concerning the English language and English-based cultures.
授業の内容や構成
Course Content or Plan
This course is conducted in person in the classroom with field and other research for Presentations and Position Papers being done online and on demand. Students may do the work for on demand weeks at the scheduled class time or outside of it. Students should be in the classroom for most of the classes. We build confidence each week with an Opening Conversation, Free Timed Writing and Hot Topics. Students work through the basic reading skills and essential paragraph writing skills with outlines and position papers. Readings for practicing the skill areas are provided by the instructor. Students are invited to personalize the contents of the course through group and individual endeavor. Students are evaluated on both the first and final drafts of each paragraph. Presentations and Hot Topics build further confidence.
