Goals of the Course [JPN] | | | 専門的学習のツールとして外国語の能力を高め，異文化理解を深めて，国際社会に相応しい教養を育むことが目的です。そのねらいは，研究拠点大学である名古屋大学の学生にふさわしい学術英語を使いこなす能力を身につけるところにあります。学術的な英文に関するエッセイレベルのリーディング能力とライティング能力を養成します。 |

授業の内容や構成
Course Content or Plan | | | The focus of this course is how to write short essays. We begin with a review of the fundamentals of paragraph construction, then proceed to the elements of a three-paragraph essay (introduction, supporting paragraph, and conclusion). We shall concentrate on comparison-contrast essays, opinion essays, and cause-and-effect essays. Topics include the selection and presentation of evidence for one’s claims and strategies for improving the logical flow of argumentation. In addition, we shall cover useful phrases and points of grammar. |

履修条件・関連する科目
Course Prerequisites and Related Courses | | | 4月のTOEFL-ITPスコアによるレベル別クラス指定。ただし、Pre-Aコース編入試験で認定された学生はPre-Aコースへ編入される。また、英語（基礎）で「F」又は「W」だった場合、Bコースになる。再履修の場合もBコースのみ受講可。 |

成績評価の方法と基準
Course Evaluation Method and Criteria | | TOEFL-ITP 30%, e-Learning 20%, Midterm essay 15%. Final paper 35%.
履修取下げの際に申し出を必要としない。５回以上欠席をした場合、「Ｗ」とする。 |
