専門的学習のツールとして外国語の能力を高め,異文化理解を深めて,国際社会に相応しい教養を育むことが目的です。学会や社会で求められるプレゼンテーションを行えるよう,リーディング・スピーキング・リスニング・ライティングの各能力を高め,また4技能の統合を目指します。

This course is intended to develop and integrate students’ abilities in reading, writing, listening, and speaking at an advanced level in academic English. The course aims to help students acquire skills for making effective presentations on various occasions such as academic conferences and business meetings.

自分の考えをその根拠とともにいかに説得力ある論理的な英文に組み立てるかというこれまで英語(基礎)・(中級)で養った知識・技能と、英語(コミュニケーション)で培ったコミュニケーション能力に加え、プレゼンテーションに必要な知識や技能を習得し、学術英語を使いこなす能力を更に発展させる。

Objectives of the Course [ENG]
The goal of this course is to make a proposal for your graduation thesis. To this purpose, the course is comprised of two major assignments. Regarding the first assignment, you will give a presentation regarding a possible thesis topic related to your major. You will critically analyze information from library sources to investigate how past research was conducted. The second assignment is to create a proposal for an academic research paper based upon the information/findings from your first assignment.

You are expected to follow the course policies below.

Course Policies
In-class Performance
• Each time you miss a real-time meeting will be considered as one absence.
• Joining a meeting more than 15 minutes late will be considered as one absence.
• Joining a meeting while you are commuting to campus will be considered as one absence.
• Being absent from 5 lessons or more will result in a final grade of a “W”「欠席」.
• You are expected to turn your camera on during real-time class meetings in order to make communication with classmates easier and demonstrate your active participation. If you do not turn your camera on, you will be marked absent, unless special circumstances that prevent you from using it occur (e.g., technology issues - internet disconnection or a broken webcam). When such circumstances arise, please contact me to explain your situation.
Homework Submissions
• All homework assignments should be completed in full. Assignments that are missing responses to one or more questions will receive a score of 0 and be counted as one absence.
• Each time you fail to submit your homework assignments or submit them late will be counted as one absence (due dates will be announced every week).
• Submitting homework assignments by email is not acceptable and will be counted as one absence.
• If you are found to have taken any of the following actions when submitting assignments, you will receive a score of 0 on the assignments and/or a final course grade of “F” in the worst cases.
o Plagiarizing information: copying and pasting texts from others’ work, sources, websites, etc. and presenting it as your own original work OR failing to provide citations each time you take information and ideas from sources (both in-text citations and the reference list in standard MLA Format).
o Using Generative AI such as ChatGPT to produce text and submitting it as your own original work
o Writing the essay or any homework assignment in Japanese, translating the text into English with a website such as DeepL, and submitting the English text produced by DeepL as your own original work.

Tips on success in this course
• Read class materials very carefully. If something is unclear, it is important to ask questions to your classmates or the instructor.
• This course will progress step-by-step. Therefore, it is crucial to attend class each week and submit homework to understand/meet the criteria for course assignments.
• Establish set times to complete required tasks and homework assignments for the following class.
