Goals of the Course [ENG]
【Standardized across all programs】 This course designed to develop students’ fundamental skills to read reports in specialized fields and academic articles as well as write reports or dissertations related to their own research focus. The course aims to help students acquire skill for writing a logical short essay of around 1,000 characters through practicing reading academic articles and writing a good paragraph.

At the end of the lecture, students are to
・be able to write a brief summary of articles.
・understand how to write a good paragraph.
・be able to write a logical short essay of around 1,000 characters.

The semester will cover the former half of the textbooks as following:
1: Introduction, Reading exercises -part 1-1.
2: Reading exercises -part 1-2. / Writing exercises -part 1, 2.
3: Reading exercises -part 2-1.
4: Reading exercises -part 2-2. / Writing exercises -part 3, 4.
5: Reading exercises -part 3-1.
6: Reading exercises -part 3-2. / Writing exercises -part 5.
7: Review
8: Reading exercises -part 4-1. / Writing exercises -part 6.
9: Reading exercises -part 4-2.
10: Reading exercises -part 5-1. / Writing exercises -part 7.
11: Reading exercises -part 5-2.
12: Reading exercises -part 6-1. / Writing exercises -part 8.
13: Reading exercises -part 6-2.
14: Writing a paragraph
15: Review and Summary, Final Exam
*The progress and contents of the lesson may change depending on the situation.

Course Prerequisites and Related Courses
Class materials are designed for advanced students.
In this semester the former half of the designated textbooks are mainly used. The latter half of it is used in Academic Japanese 4A in spring semester.

Course Evaluation Method and Criteria
Students who need the course credits are required to meet the following conditions:
Quiz 20% Assignment 20% Essay 30%, Final Exam 20% Participation 10% TOTAL 100%
* Need to have a permission of the instructor when students request course withdrawal during the semester.
* If a student is absent from classes more than 4 times, the grade will be “Absent.”
