授業の目的 【英語】
Goals of the Course [ENG]
【Standardized across all programs】 Literature, most often dealing with the real problems of life or society through the description of fictitious characters or events, directly appeals to the mind of readers and inspires strong emotions. It so motivates us to learn about the past, think about the present and see into the future. This course of literature, unlike those in schools where the importance is given to the correct reading of the authorized materials of the textbooks, sees wider range of literary works and offers varied methods of reading, and above all aims at deeper understanding of them.
授業の達成目標 【英語】
Objectives of the Course [ENG]
As a liberal arts course in the humanities, this course is designed to introduce students to theories and methods currently used in literary studies, while fostering critical inquiry and analysis. Students in this class will develop basic academic skills like critical reading and analytic writing, while also enhancing communication skills through group discussion and presentation.
授業の内容や構成
Course Content or Plan
Few audiences in Japan read works of classical Japanese literature in their entirety, or in the original language. Nowadays, it is more common for people to form connections to texts through adaptations and remediations—be it through storybook versions of classics like the Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, works of manga, anime, live-action television drama and film, theatrical adaptations, fan fiction, video games, or a host of non-narrative media. While adaptation to more accessible forms of media helps ensure the continuation of Japan’s literary heritage, it usually comes at the cost of changes or effacements to the original texts. This is important to keep this in mind when attempting to assess the cultural impact of texts, or how the reception and interpretations of texts have changed over time.

In this class, we will be reading works of classical Japanese literature and comparing them with adaptations in other formats and media. Through this comparative approach, we will seek to understand literary texts as sites of open interpretation, where meanings are constantly negotiated and renegotiated over time, and verbal and visual codes are translated across media for different audiences. In other words, we will learn about processes of adaptation.

Course content will be organized into fourteen individual modules, each focusing on a particular topic or theme. Note that between now and the start of the semester, the following topics are subject to slight modification:

Module 1: Course Overview

Module 2: Adapting "Tale of the Bamboo Cutter"

Module 3: Pictorial and Gamic Adaptations of Classical Poetry

Module 4: Intertextuality in "The Tale of Genji"

Module 5: The Tale of Genji Scrolls

Module 7: Transformations of a Genji "Fangirl"--Sarashina Diary

Module 8: The Tale of Heike on Page and Stage

Module 10: Adapting Treasury of the Loyal Retainers in Ghost Stories at Yotsuya

Module 11: Scandal on Stage: Early News Media and Puppet Theater

Assessment in this course will be according to a contract system. At the start of the semester, each student will be given a choice of three different learning tracks, each with a different set of tasks and learning objectives that will culminate in a fixed grade--B, A, or A+/S. Upon successfully meeting all the objectives in their chosen track, students will earn the grade they signed up for. Specific details about the assessment schedule for each track can be viewed on the online version of the syllabus, on our CANVAS site, which will be accessible two weeks before the start of the semester (see below for details about how to access the course site before the start of the semester.

Students need to notify the instructor about the course withdrawal when they have no intention of finishing the course during the semester.
