授業の目的 【英語】
Goals of the Course [ENG]
【Standardized across all programs】 Cells are not only the basic unit of living organisms, but also the smallest unit capable of self-renewal. In this course, we aim to deepen our understanding of the basic mechanisms of biological phenomena by studying the structure and functions of cells and their organelles. Students will also deepen their understanding of biopolymers such as nucleic acids, proteins, lipids, and polysaccharides, energy, and metabolism that support life. From this lecture, students will acquire the basic knowledge of biology necessary for the study of Basic Biology II.

Objectives of the Course [ENG]
The objective of this course is to introduce the key concepts of basic biology. These include the structure and function of cells with regard to differences in plant and animal cells, genetics, and concepts of evolution. In order to understand life, we have to understand the molecular processes that occur in and around cells, from energy production to reproduction and gene expression. Through such processes, living things go through evolution giving rise to biological diversity.

課外学修等
Study Load (Self-directed Learning Outside Course Hours)
Students are expected to read and understand one to three chapters (depending on topic) of the textbook every week, and come to class prepared for discussion. In order to assess students’ understanding, homework will be given after every lecture.
注意事項
Notice for Students
"1. Course webpage
The instructor will use TACT (Tokai Academic Combination Tools; https://tact.ac.thers.ac.jp/portal) to distribute all course-related materials, detailed course schedules, and all relevant communication. TACT will be also used for uploading and submission of the homework.
2. Attendance
If you cannot attend class, you should contact the instructor as soon as possible either by email or phone. Attendance will be graded and missing class will affect your grade.
3. Preparation for class
Students are expected to get familiar with the contents of the lecture (by reading the corresponding chapters in the textbook or reference book) before coming to the class, in order to facilitate their understanding of the contents. The instructor will give homework to check your understanding of each lecture.
4. Personal electronics policy
Personal electronic devices should not be visible or audible during class time.
5. Academic honesty and original work
Cheating and copying (including plagiarism) will not be tolerated in this class. Cheating will result in an F grade, and this will be strictly followed.
6. Course Withdrawal
Students who wish to withdraw from the course will have to report to the instructor by November 3, 2025. The withdrawal deadline is strictly followed."

担当教員からのメッセージ
Message from the Instructor
The contents of this course are very close to what most of you have learned in high-school biology class, with some additions. If you understand the basic concepts of biology in this course, all following biology-related courses will be easier to understand and follow.
