授業の目的 【英語】
Goals of the Course [ENG]
【Standardized across all programs】 Students will conduct various observations and experiments using a variety of organisms, including animals, plants, and microorganisms. In addition to learning how to handle and observe organisms and how to operate observation equipment, students learn about the structure and function through naked-eye observation, microscopic observation, dissection of plants and animals, and vegetation surveys on campus.
授業の達成目標 【英語】
Objectives of the Course [ENG]
The aim of the course is to gain a basic understanding of the structure and function of various living things through their observation by the naked eye or through a microscope, their dissection and by experimentation on them. The goal is also to learn how genes are related to structure and function, so you can understand the flow from classical biology, which had observation as its main objective, to modern biology, which pursues understanding on the molecular level.
授業の内容や構成
Course Content or Plan
●Objectives of the Course
In this training, you will learn how to handle animals, plants and microorganisms, how to observe them, and how to use instruments. You will cultivate the ability to operate biological experiments independently. Through the course, you will also get basic ideas underlying the modern biological studies.

●Course Content or Plan
01) Guidance and safety education
02) Observation of plant cells
03) Observation of the yeast cell cycle
04) The zoo teaches us biodiversity and evolution
05) Observation of cell division at the growth point of onion roots
06) Observation of nematodes: effects of genetic abnormalities on animal morphology and movement
07) Computational simulation of cell growth
08) Observing the feeding behavior of Drosophila: what food do you like? Hate? (*1:Genetically modified flies will be used)
09) Learn properties of enzymes (alkaline phosphatase)
10) Comparative observation of human blood cells and epithelial cells
11) Measurement of cell osmotic pressure by plasma separation
12) Observation of plankton

*1: Adequate measures will be taken to prevent the spread of genetically modified flies outside the facilities.
The contents and order may be changed. All classes are face-to-face.

Course Prerequisites and Related Courses
In this course, experiments and observations on animals (Drosophila, nematodes), plants (onion, Arabidopsis) and microorganisms (yeast, plankton) will be conducted. Students who are unable to perform these experiments for any reason are not recommended to take this course. In addition, a small amount of blood will be collected by pricking a finger with a needle to collect and observe blood cells. Students who have concerns about the blood collection will be given an alternative plan or another assignment if they report to the instructor before the experiment.
成績評価の方法と基準
Course Evaluation Method and Criteria
Attendance and report for each experiment. As a general rule, students will not be able to earn credits unless they are present and submit reports on all practical trainings by the deadline. If you attend three or more times, your grade will be "A+, A, B, C, C- or F" instead of "Absent." Students must submit a request of course withdrawal to the instructor (Seiji Kojima) by the end of May via TACT lecture site.
