Goals of the Course | | "North and South, East and West". This is a course about language and multiculturalism in modern Britain. ('Modern' here meaning roughly from the mid-19th century to the present day.) We will explore: regional dialects in the UK as markers of class and identity; the rise and fall of 'Industrial England'; ethnic 'Englishes' (West Indian, South Asian) in the context of post-war immigration and racial tension; the languages of British Imperialism; and modern literature as a touchstone of multicultural conflict. This will very much be a 'mixed-media' class (TV, movies, music, poetry, fiction). |

到達目標 【日本語】 Objectives of the Course(JPN) | | 受講生は、現代英語の方言やアクセントの多様性に関する理解が深まる。また、メディア分析のスキルを養う(例えばテレビや音楽を通じて歴史を学ぶ方法の習得)。さらに、イギリスにおける近年の政治的・社会的混乱についての理解を得ることで、他の地域での関連する出来事(例えば、ヨーロッパにおけるポピュリスト右派の台頭やトランプ主義など)の理解も促進される。Students' sense of the dialect- and accentual-range of modern English will be enhanced. They will develop media analysis skills: how to learn history through TV and music, for example. They will gain a contextual understanding of recent political and social turmoil in the UK, which might help with understanding of related developments elsewhere (the rise of the populist right in Europe, Trumpism etc). |
