授業の目的 【英語】 Goals of the Course | | "The Matter of Britain". This course has three interlocking aims. First, to introduce students to the cultural and linguistic variety of the British Isles. Second, to explore the basic structures and narratives of British folklore and mythology. Third, to consider the development of genres - especially 'fantasy' - through which, from the 20th century, Britain has represented and marketed itself globally. |

到達目標 【日本語】 Objectives of the Course(JPN) | | 履修生は、テキストや視覚資料の歴史的解釈のスキルを養う。また、イギリスの文化史と英語の歴史的発展についてより深い理解を得る。そして、ウェールズ語で挨拶をし、相手の健康について尋ねる方法を習得する。Students will develop skills in the historical interpretation of textual and visual evidence. By the end of the course they will have a deeper understanding both of British cultural history and of the historical development of the English language. They will have learned how to greet people and ask after their health in the Welsh language. |

Matter of Britain (2): fairies and fairylands. 7. Matter of Britain (3): Merrie England. 8. Victorian fairylands: Celtic, Anglo-Saxon, Scandinavian, Germanic. 9. Industrial fairytales: the fairies take flight. 10. Anglo-Saxon values and the Norman Yolk. 11. W.B. Yeats and the Celtic Twilight. 12. The twentieth-century ‘Matter of Ireland’. 13. J.R.R. Tolkien: building worlds out of language. 14. The bad writing of Harry Potter. 15. Summary of the course. |
