Goals of the Course
It is a foundational course designed to equip first-year 'Japan-in-Asia Cultural Studies (JACS) BA students with essential academic writing skills. Developing a strong thesis is crucial for success in the humanities, and this course will guide you through the fundamentals of constructing arguments, engaging with sources, and refining your writing process. By mastering these skills early, you will build a solid foundation for your future research and critical inquiry in the field.

Course Content / Plan
The course is co-taught, with each professor approaching academic writing through their respective research fields and methodologies. One half, led by a professor specializing in history, focuses on core writing skills, argumentation, and the use of historical sources. The other half, taught by a professor in cinema and media studies, explores research strategies, critical analysis, and discipline-specific approaches to writing in media and cultural studies.
