Goals of the Course
This seminar explores how crime and criminal actors are represented across various media forms, including film, documentaries, podcasts, and literature, and how these representations both reflect and shape public understandings of criminality, justice, and deviance. This seminar adopts a student-led approach: each week, students will analyse and discuss media objects (films, series, podcasts, books, etc.) that portray the underworld, while also doing activities such as planning a newsletter or a podcast. Through guided discussion and peer exchange, we will ask: What image of the “criminal” is constructed? What assumptions are embedded in these narratives? What is left invisible? Does life imitate the art? The seminar invites critical reflection on how the line between reality and representation becomes blurred, and how media can reinforce, question, or subvert dominant ideas about crime, punishment, and morality.
