Goals of the Course | | | This course teaches the use of social science quantitative techniques, emphasizing applications of value to administrators and researchers alike in the fields of law, political science, public policy, and public and international affairs. It includes a review of theoretical application as well as practical use of descriptive statistics and an introduction to hypothesis testing. |

Class 2 - Key concepts, using statistics in the research process, levels of measurement
Class 3 - Basic descriptive statistics, displaying data
Class 4 - Measures of central tendency
Class 5 - Measures of dispersion
Class 6 - Review for midterm
Class 7 - Midterm exam
Class 8 - Measures of dispersion (cont.), the normal curve
Class 9 - Z-scores, area under the normal curve
Class 10 - Inferential statistics, sampling distribution, central limit theorem
Class 11 - Bias and efficiency, confidence
Class 12 - Hypothesis testing
Class 13 - Hypothesis testing
Class 14 - Two-tailed t-tests
Class 15 - Final exam |

Course Prerequisites and Related Courses | | | No prerequisites. However, a good command of the English language (reading, speaking, and writing) is required. A mathematical background is not expected, but students should know basic algebra at a minimum. |
