授業の内容や構成 Course Content / Plan | | A rich and lively source of cultural comparison can be found in the genre of travel writing. Naturally travel writers document their observations of the peoples and places they visit. Often these perceptions—of the strange, frustrating, joyful, or comical in a foreign setting—are engaging in themselves, providing us with a kind of vicarious fascination about worlds and ways unknown. In certain remarkable instances, the author’s encounter with a foreign culture brings into relief his own background, leads him to reflect on the assumptions, beliefs, and practices which he had previously taken for granted.
In this course, we explore works by authors who voyage eastward and whose travel experience, in one way or another, proves unexpectedly enlightening. We begin with a theoretical foundation: the anthropologist Clifford Geertz’s approach to cultural interpretation—as well as his practice of it in Bali. From there, we go back in time to examine a few pre- and early modern travelogues, including excerpts from what is perhaps the most famous travel account ever, Marco Polo’s Devisement du Monde (Description of the World). The second half of the course features modern and contemporary texts: Isabella Bird’s 1878 trek to Hokkaido to meet the Ainu people (Unbeaten Tracks in Japan), Peter Hessler’s time as a teacher in China (Rivertown), and Jan Morris’s keen portraits of Hong Kong and Singapore (Among the Cities). |
