授業の内容や構成 Course Content / Plan | | As the field of critical theory developed in the late 1930s, its purpose was to identify cultural practices and institutional norms in need of reform, and to challenge them in hopes of bringing about the desired change. In this course, we concentrate on a central concern in critical theory: the question of justice. We shall examine several prominent works of critical theory in tandem with literary texts that are also fundamentally about the nature of justice and which can therefore be placed in meaningful dialogue with the theorists’ ideas. Examples of topics to be covered: competing visions of law and justice; technologies of punishment; the ‘unseen woman’ in the eyes of the law; and the limits of righteous rebellion, or ‘How might a quest for justice become unjust?’ Among the literary works we study are Sophocles’s tragedy Antigone; Heinrich von Kleist’s novella Michael Kohlhaas; and Franz Kafka’s short story “In the Penal Colony.” In addition, we watch the 1992 film The Story of Qiu Ju. Critical theorists to be discussed include Giorgio Agamben, Walter Benjamin, Michel Foucault, and Simone de Beauvoir. |
