授業の内容や構成 Course Content / Plan | | This course covers a wide range of ideas about the nature and purpose of literature, and about how to comprehend and interpret it. We study works of literary theory and criticism spanning ancient to modern from authors such as Plato, TS Eliot, and Virginia Woolf. Additionally we read a few short works of literature (for example, Henry James’s The Figure in the Carpet) that illustrate (and, at times, complicate) the theories we explore. Some of the questions we shall address include the following: What is literature? What is the value of reading it? How do we decide what literary writing means? Must literature conform to certain rules in order to be considered excellent—or even considered art at all? What is the Western literary tradition and how have women writers fitted into it? Ought we as readers and critics of literature hold up dispassionate neutrality as an ideal? How have approaches to understanding literature changed over the course of history and what are the major movements, or schools of thought, in the contemporary field of literary studies? |
