Goals of the Course
This course will look at Social Identity Theory and Social Categorization Theory, two major theories that explain our group identity can be cognitively interchanged so as to treat the outgroup as an ingroup. Through this manipulation of one's identity we can avoid negative intergroup consequences, such as prejudice, racism, stereotype judgements, and intergroup conflict. The ideal situation is where we can consider the outgroup as part of our ingroup, and treat them like we would our own. We call this common ingroup identity. We will read and discuss chapters of a comprehensive book on multiple social categorization, looking its processes and applications.

Objectives of the Course
Students will be able to identify the social processes behind multiple categorization in order to achieve common ingroup identity. They will learn how prejudice and racism can be mitigated by manipulation of people's cognition of their identity, and how this can be achieved. They will also gain perspective on how multicultural societies can be transformed through education of children to become citizens of a multigroup community.
