Objectives of the Course [JPN]
This is a two-semester course exclusively designed to help you write a research paper, such as a dissertation, journal article, conference paper, or abstract. With a specially designed Research Writing Recipe, you will gain comprehensive knowledge to help you write a research paper from scratch. The one-year course is structured to help you accomplish the most important tasks in the research writing process, including (i) formulating a thesis statement that ensures your research originality and clarity, (ii) developing your thesis statement into a convincing argument, (iii) strengthening the argument by anticipating and addressing the potential counterarguments that may challenge the core ideas of your research, (iv) expanding the argument into a full-blown research paper, including the development of a compelling abstract and an engaging introduction. The spring semester will cover the first two stages, focusing on thesis development and argumentation. The fall semester will address the latter stages, emphasizing counterargument strategies and the composition of the full research paper. You can find a detailed breakdown of each semester's lessons in the course content below. All classes will be delivered in clearly spoken English, accompanied by simple and entertaining presentation materials that everyone can readily understand and enjoy. By the end of the course, you will feel confident and well-prepared to complete and submit your research paper for publication.

Course Content or Plan
In this course, you will collaborate in groups and have plenty of opportunities to actively participate in discussions and interact with both your instructor and peers during class. Everything you do in class will be centered around your own research, providing you with a personalized and hands-on learning experience. During the fall semester, you will take part in the following sessions:

Lesson 1: Writing is Thinking again (Lecture)
(Reintroduce the practical and constructive logical thinking skills for research writing.)

Lesson 2: Writing an appealing abstract (Lecture)
(How to write an informative abstract that can appeal to a wide audience.)

Lesson 3: Present and discuss your abstract – 1 (Presentation and Discussion)

Lesson 4: Present and discuss your abstract – 2 (Presentation and Discussion)

Lesson 5: Writing an attractive introduction (Lecture)
(How to write a high-quality introduction that is attractive and informative.)

Lesson 6: Let’s write an introduction together (Group-work)
(Learn from each other about the common elements and difficulties in an introduction.)

Lesson 7: Present and discuss your introduction – 1 (Presentation and Discussion)

Lesson 8: Present and discuss your introduction – 2 (Presentation and Discussion)

Lesson 9: Advanced topics on thesis statement and logical argument (Lecture)
(Study your thesis statement and logical argument from a different perspective.)

Lesson 10: Counterargument (Lecture)
(Understand what a counterargument is, and distinguish it from (i) disagreement and (ii) criticism.)

Lesson 11: How to defend your thesis statement (Lecture)
(Understand the Premise of Defense through some fun logical exercises.)

Lesson 12: Strengthen your logical argument – 1 (Lecture and Group-work)
(Build a Premise of Defense to counter the potential counterargument.)

Lesson 13: Strengthen your logical argument – 2 (Discussion)
(A final look at the thesis statement and logical argument that you have built.)

Lesson 14: Finalization of your research (Lecture)
(How to write the Discussion and Limitations of your research paper.)

Lesson 15: Review, reflection, and course evaluation. (Discussion)

Course Prerequisites and Related Courses
Graduate students who can communicate in English.
成績評価の方法と基準
Course Evaluation Method and Criteria
Student performance will be evaluated based on (i) classwork and (ii) presentation.
Students who need the course credits are required to complete both (i) and (ii).
Students who wish to withdraw from this course must notify the course instructor by the end of October.

It includes a step-by-step guide on how to (i) establish research originality and clarity, (ii) build a thesis statement, (iii) build a logical argument, (iv) write an appealing abstract and attractive introduction, etc. All these materials will be provided free of charge to full-time students of the course.

Outside the course hours, all students are required to
(i) Complete the designated exercises in the Research Writing Recipe,
(ii) Have at least one tutorial session with the course instructor.
