Goals of the Course
"Comparative Law II" focuses on the legal systems in Asian countries, particularly in Southeast Asia. The initial part of the course introduces the concept of law globally and examines the expansion of Western legal systems in the modern era, juxtaposed with indigenous norms existing in Asian societies. Subsequently, the course delves into the study of constitutional laws in Southeast Asian countries, highlighting how these laws reflect national identities and societal perceptions of justice.

Objectives of the Course
By studying this course, students are expected to be able to identify characteristics and problems of law in Asian countries which have unique cultural and historical backgrounds, economic challenges, and various political regimes. Participants should compare Asian constitutional laws with countries of other regions and understand the general situation of law in non-Western societies through the discussion in this course.

Weeks 1-2: Introduction

Discuss the purpose of the course and the relevance of constitutional laws in understanding Asian societies.

Weeks 3-4: The Law in Various Worlds: From the Perspective of Islamic Law

Explore the nature of Sharia and its interactions with the nation-state in Southeast Asia.

Mid-term assingment 40%, End-term assingment 40%, Contribution to class 20%.
