Goals of the Course [JPN] | | 専門的学習のツールとして外国語の能力を高め，異文化理解を深めて，国際社会に相応しい教養を育むことが目的です。そのねらいは，研究拠点大学である名古屋大学の学生にふさわしい学術英語を使いこなす能力を身につけるところにあります。学術的な英文に関する基礎的なリーディング能力とライティング能力を養成します。

Objectives of the Course [JPN] | | | 論理的な英文のカギとなるパラグラフの構造に着目し、目的に応じて必要な情報をいかに読みとるか、また逆に、自分の考えをその根拠とともにいかに説得力ある論理的な英文に組み立てるかを学ぶ。将来、専門の論文を英語で読んだり書いたりする時に、指針となる英文構成法の基礎、および実際に役立つ英語表現を多く習得する。 |

授業の内容や構成
Course Content or Plan | | This course aims to develop students’ ability to express and support opinions in spoken and written English. Through discussion-based activities, short readings, and guided writing tasks, students will practice organizing ideas clearly, providing reasons and examples, responding to opposing viewpoints, and engaging in structured communication.
Each thematic unit introduces a contemporary social or cultural issue designed to stimulate critical thinking and personal reflection. Students will build foundational skills in opinion writing, paragraph development, discussion strategies, and presentation of viewpoints.
Week 1 – Orientation
Course overview, expectations, introduction to expressing opinions in English. Review of basic discussion strategies and paragraph structure.
Weeks 2–6 – Thematic Opinion Units 1
Topics include appearance and conformity, digital habits and responsibility, cultural expectations in relationships, expressions of emotion across cultures, and generational differences in communication.
Students will:
Develop opinion paragraphs with clear topic sentences
Provide supporting reasons and examples
Practice structured pair and group discussions
Receive feedback on clarity and organization
Week 7 – Writing Activity 1 (Midterm Assessment)
In-class writing assessment covering content and skills from Weeks 2–6.
Weeks 8–13 – Thematic Opinion Units 2
Topics include fan culture and identity, inclusion and accessibility in society, career choices and risk-taking, ethical responsibility in the workplace, family and lifestyle decisions, and the role of English in global communication.
Students will:
Expand arguments with counterpoints
Improve fluency in opinion-based discussion
Practice short presentations
Develop more detailed and structured written responses
Week 14 – Writing Activity 2 (Final Assessment)
In-class writing assessment covering content and skills from Weeks 8–13.
Throughout the course, emphasis will be placed on active participation, clarity of expression, logical organization, and respectful engagement with differing viewpoints. |
