Goals of the Course [JPN] | | 専門的学習のツールとして外国語の能力を高め，異文化理解を深めて，国際社会に相応しい教養を育むことが目的です。そのねらいは，研究拠点大学である名古屋大学の学生にふさわしい学術英語を使いこなす能力を身につけるところにあります。学術的な英文に関する基礎的なリーディング能力とライティング能力を養成します。

Objectives of the Course [JPN] | | | 論理的な英文のカギとなるパラグラフの構造に着目し、目的に応じて必要な情報をいかに読みとるか、また逆に、自分の考えをその根拠とともにいかに説得力ある論理的な英文に組み立てるかを学ぶ。将来、専門の論文を英語で読んだり書いたりする時に、指針となる英文構成法の基礎、および実際に役立つ英語表現を多く習得する。 |

授業の内容や構成
Course Content or Plan | | The main assignment of this A-level class will be a short essay. Students will choose their own topics and write their essays by using a careful, step-by-step process. They will also learn strategies for reading English-language texts and methods of critically evaluating information in sources. The typical lesson will involve extensive group and class discussion of sources related to social issues in contemporary Japan and throughout the world.
Specific lesson topics will include:
• Choosing socially significant and compelling essay topics
• Finding relevant sources
• Expressing personal opinions about social issues
• Developing and organizing your essay
• Taking information from sources: summary, paraphrase, and quotation
• Synthesizing sources by examining their similarities and differences
• Thinking critically about information in sources
• Determining your overall position, or thesis
• Peer review: giving helpful feedback on classmates’ writing |
