授業の内容や構成
Course Content or Plan | | The course aims to create a proposal for their graduation thesis or study. To achieve this purpose, the course consists of two major assignments. For the first assignment, students will give a presentation on their library research. In the presentation, students will critically and thoroughly analyze the credibility of the source information they found through the library search. Regarding the second assignment, students will create a proposal for an academic research paper based on the information and findings from the first assignment. Students will also read academic journals and scrutinize the information they contain in order to consider how their own research could advance the state of knowledge in their field.
For the first course assignment - giving a presentation
The purpose of this assignment is to critically scrutinize how reliable, reasonable, and logical the information in sources is. The goal is to improve your critical thinking skills for your academic research.
Through this course assignment, you will learn;
1. the concept of evidence in academic text
2. how to find appropriate sources for academic purposes
3. reading strategies (including note-taking)
4. the format for academic work (MLA style)
5. how to evaluate information from different types of sources.
6. how to critique sources by evaluating how effectively each piece of evidence supports the author’s main argument.
Basic process of this assignment project:
1. select a topic that you are interested in (Your topic should be related to your major)
2. find appropriate sources (at least two)
3. identify type(s) of evidence in text and describe it in detail.
4. critically analyze how persuasive and reasonable the evidence is (ex. what information is missing / should be more detailed)
5. suggest how future research can provide more effective evidence/ what types of information the reader should seek out.
Regarding the second course assignment, detailed information will be provided as the course progresses. |

Message from the Instructor | | Course policy:
In-class Performance
• Each time you miss a real-time meeting will be considered as one absence.
• Joining a meeting more than 15 minutes late will be considered as one absence.
• Joining a meeting while you are commuting to campus will be considered as one absence.
• Being absent from 5 lessons or more will result in a final grade of a “W”「欠席」.
• You are expected to turn your camera on during real-time class meetings in order to make communication with classmates easier and demonstrate your active participation. If you do not turn your camera on, you will be marked absent, unless special circumstances that prevent you from using it occur (e.g., technology issues - internet disconnection or a broken webcam). When such circumstances arise, please contact me to explain your situation.
Homework Submissions
• All homework assignments should be completed in full. Assignments that are missing responses to one or more questions will receive a score of 0 and be counted as one absence.
• Each time you fail to submit your homework assignments or submit them late will be counted as one absence (due dates will be announced every week).
• Submitting homework assignments by email is not acceptable and will be counted as one absence.
AI Policy
• If you are found to have taken any of the following actions when submitting assignments, you will receive a score of 0 on the assignments and/or a final course grade of “F” in the worst cases.
o Plagiarizing information: copying and pasting texts from others’ work, sources, websites, etc. and presenting it as your original work OR failing to provide citations each time you take information and ideas from sources (both in-text citations and the reference list in standard Format).
o Using Generative AI such as ChatGPT to produce text and submitting it as your own original work
o Translating Japanese text into English with a website such as DeepL, and submitting the English text produced by DeepL as your own original work.

• Read class materials very carefully. If something is unclear, it is important to ask questions to your classmates or the instructor.
• This course will progress step-by-step. Therefore, it is crucial to attend class each week and submit homework to understand/meet the criteria for course assignments.
• Establish set times to complete required tasks and homework assignments for the following class. |
