授業の目的 【英語】
Goals of the Course [ENG]
【Standardized across all programs】 The goal of this course is to understand culture and art from the perspective of representation. “Representation” means something that is present in the mind or consciousness; specifically, it is the shape or figure that appears through letters, images, sounds, etc. Therefore, not only various works of art, literature, music, and films, but also media such as letters, images, and sounds are the target of this course. We will also examine how these representations have been expressed and received in relation to the times, society and culture.
授業の達成目標 【英語】
Objectives of the Course [ENG]
Overall, departing from our observations upon Asian metropolises/societies, students are expected to debate and discuss cinematic/visual/cultural texts in relation to the urban condition on local, regional, and global scales. Through the lectures, students are expected to learn how to approach and critique the cultural space of cities by utilizing key concepts drawn from various theoretical perspectives, such as cultural studies, visual culture, sociology, and urban geography
授業の内容や構成
Course Content or Plan
In this disorienting, globalizing world, the lives and existence of human beings are to a great extent defined by the urban conditions they are enmeshed within and contending with. This survey course attempts to look at major urban issues and cultural topics in modern societies by engaging with a wide spectrum of cultural texts drawn from films and other types of visual/image works such as photography, transmedia art projects/installations, manga, and anime.

Our case studies pay particular attention to the social contexts and cities in contemporary East Asia. However, the 'city' will not be simply explored as the theme or ambiance featured in these texts. Following our adventure of 'entering' the city as cultural texts, with the socio-historical dimensions of urban space theoretically surveyed, we shall at the same time direct our attention to the various types of urbanites and their mental life. While our urban lives are haunted by memories and desires, on the other hand, they have been greatly mediated by newly-developed digital technologies and social media platforms.

課外学修等
Study Load (Self-directed Learning Outside Course Hours)
the study load will largely depend on the students' commitment to pre-reading and previewing materials. Since homework viewing is not a weekly task, students should prioritize pre-lecture preparation to fully engage with the material during class. This preparatory work, combined with class participation and assignments, will form the core of the course's intellectual challenge and learning experience. The estimated study load, while variable, could still be significant due to the intensive format and depth of the content.
