本授業の目的は、John Donne、Andrew Marvell、George Herbertをはじめとする形而上詩人たちの作品を、伝記的背景・歴史的文脈・先行研究等を踏まえて精読することを通して、英語で書かれた詩を多角的に読む能力を養うことである。

Goals of the Course
The purpose of this course is to develop students’ ability to read poems written in English from a variety of perspectives through close readings of poetry by the Metaphysical poets, including John Donne, Andrew Marvell, and George Herbert. The course will draw on a range of contextual sources, such as biographical materials, socio-cultural background, and critical scholarship.

（１）詩で用いられている韻律や修辞技法を正確に把握できるようになること。
（２）詩の中で表現されている物事や思惟を、上記（1）を踏まえて把握できるようになること。
（３）上記（1）および（2）の結果を、学術的な言葉で論理的に説明できるようになること。
授業の内容や構成
Course Content / Plan
〈概要〉
各回ごとに受講者の中から発表担当者を決め、発表担当者が提起した疑問を題材として、少人数のグループに分かれてディスカッションを行う（当然ながら、各回で扱う範囲を各受講者が事前に読んでおくことが前提となる）。担当教員はグループごとにディスカッションの内容を確認し、最後にクラス全体に向けて簡潔な講義と更なる問題提起を行う。

英語で書かれた文学作品を辞書を引きながら読むことができる程度の英語力が求められる。
成績評価の方法と基準
Course Evaluation Method and Criteria
授業参加点（発表・授業中の発言など）:70％、期末レポート:30％。（60点以上を合格とする。）
＊欠席４回以上で不可となる。遅刻3回で欠席1回分とみなす。30分以上の遅刻は欠席扱いとする。

授業で扱う作品の原文および論文等は教員が配布する。また、作品の日本語訳が存在する場合も教員が配布する。
