授業の目的 【英語】 Goals of the Course | | By the end of this course, students will:
1) Master fundamental knowledge of key facts, themes, and ideas in the history of modern Japanese and East Asian history. 2) Demonstrate their mastery of historical knowledge and practice through classroom discussion, debates, and oral presentations. 3) Conduct basic historical research including the effective use of libraries, archives, and online databases to produce original interpretations of the past. |

授業の内容や構成 Course Content / Plan | | | This seminar course is designed to interrogate Japan's position within and interactions with East Asia, especially in the modern period. Topics will change each year in response to global events and prevailing topics in East Asian studies, but themes generally include Japanese social organization, international relations, nationalism and imperialism, gender, and/or the environment. A primary emphasis will be on Japanese cultural history, including literature, pop culture, music, and film to bring different historical periods and themes to life, especially examining the reach and reception of Japanese pop culture around East Asia. |

成績評価の方法と基準 Course Evaluation Method and Criteria | | | This course adopts a grading and assessment structure consisting of multiple optional grading tracks that differ in the number and expectation of assignments. Students will select their preferred grade track at the beginning of the semester, and then will be awarded that grade upon completion of all assignments at the expectation level corresponding to that track. Regardless of track, students must surpass 60% to pass the course. |
