Goals of the Course | | Functional materials, which possess various physical properties such as electrical conductivity, dielectric properties, and magnetic properties, are used in a wide range of fields—including catalysis, sensors, and energy conversion—and play a vital role in underpinning the modern information society. The electrical, optical, and magnetic properties of functional materials can be understood based on quantum theory, which describes microscopic properties such as the arrangement of atoms and molecules that make up the material and the behavior of electrons. For example, semiconductor materials—which are of paramount importance in the electronics that underpin modern society—can be broadly characterized by two key features. The first is the ability to control electron conduction within the material; the second is the ability to exhibit light absorption and light emission phenomena through the conversion of light energy into electronic energy. Devices such as diodes, transistors, solar cells, and light-emitting diodes (LEDs) utilize these properties. This course aims to provide an understanding of the fundamental physical properties of representative functional materials—such as dielectric materials, optical materials, thermoelectric materials, magnetic materials, and superconducting materials—as well as the process techniques and scientific and technological aspects related to these materials, based on insights into the behavior of electrons derived from quantum theory.
The goal of this course is for students to acquire the following knowledge and skills by the end of the course.
1. Understand and explain the origins of phenomena such as light absorption and reflection in solids.
2. Understand and explain the origins of the magnetic properties of solids.
3. Understand and explain the band structure and doping of semiconductors.
4. Understand and explain the mechanism of p-n junctions.
5. Understand and explain the operating principles of semiconductor devices such as solar cells and light-emitting diodes (LEDs).
6. Explain the processing methods, microstructure formation, and functional properties of inorganic solid materials (ceramics).
7. Understand and explain the physical origins of superconductivity and the properties of superconducting materials. |
